MASTER PATTERNS FOR SAND MOULDING
To briefly recap first section of the website, MASTER PATTERN is a term that is used to refer to any hard copy model or design used in the foundry as a template to create a metal cast. In sculpture making, a master pattern is usually an artist’s studio sculpture, which is often specifically made for the foundry using an exceptionally sturdy construction method.
Just like the master patterns used for lost wax casting, the master patterns used for sand moulding can also be sub-categorised into LOST and PERMANENT versions. Master patterns for sand can also be constructed from a variety of materials, though the particularly heavy demands of the piece moulding process means that many of the soft or lightweight materials adequate for building lost wax patterns, are totally unsuited to the sand moulding process.
Before starting upon the construction of a sand master pattern for the first time, artists are advised to check with their founder that the proposed construction method and material’s content of their studio work is suited to a sand moulding process. As with any master pattern, the artist’s sand pattern determines the overall form of the casting. In this respect it is vital to construct a sand pattern to an appropriate standard and finish. Founders will not normally modify a pattern unless they are given specific instructions to do so, the exception here being any technical modifications needed to handle or process the work during moulding (see also MASTER PATTERNS).
