< FINISHING INDEX

INTRODUCTION

Producing a cast of the arist’s original artwork is only one part of the founder’s job. Finishing the rough cast to a high standard is also a major undertaking. When having work cast at a foundry, it is important to remember that the finishing of a cast can take some considerable time, even if the casting itself is excellent.

Metalwork and finishing is such an important part of the job, that only the very smallest of foundries do not employ skilled labour specifically dedicated to finishing activities. Some of the larger foundries will have separate workshops for metalworking, these are often situated well away from the moulding and investment areas.

This section of the website looks at the various processes and techniques used in modern foundries to finish art and design casts. Although the artist themselves need not possess the skills of the foundry finisher, having an understanding of the the processes involved can be of great help to the sculptor – even a basic knowledge can open up new possibilities for developing ideas and making sculpture in metal.
