FITTING A CAST TO AN EXISTING STRUCTURE

On occasion, it may be necessary to install a finished cast accurately into a pre-existing architectural feature (such as a niché or alcove etc), or else fit a separately constructed visual element to the cast itself (for example an inset display case). Dependent upon the margin of error permissible, it may be advisable to supply the founder with an accurate mock-up or template of the the feature that interfaces with the cast, or else supply measurements which enable foundry staff to construct a suitable mock-up in the workshop.

A full scale mock-up of a remote feature enables foundry personnel to OFFER UP the feature to the cast design in advance of installation, this helps ensure that the foundry produced artwork can be located and fitted with the external elements in a way that avoids undue difficulty. Fine tuning a work in the foundry can save an enormous amount of time and potential trouble in comparison to fitting up from scratch whilst out on-site. Most mock-ups are constructed in wood (ply, MDF etc). However, if the founder is required to place any substantial weight on the mock-up, the temporary feature may be better constructed (or at least part constructed), in a more substantial material such as steel.
