CERAMIC SHELL INVESTMENTS

Ceramic shell investments were developed post-war, primarily for casting precision and high integrity industrial components (typically for use in aerospace industries etc). The ceramic shell investment system also lends itself well to automated processing and mass production techniques, this feature enables industry to produce large quantities of quality components at a relatively low unit cost. By the late 1960’s and early 70’s, sculpture foundries and similar design focused companies began to recognise the potential of this investment system for producing cast reproductions of three dimensional art and design works.

Today most professional art foundries across America, Europe and Australia use the ceramic shell investment system. It should be stressed that there are some outstanding foundries still using the traditional plaster and grog system, and that the use of a ceramic shell system in itself is no firm guarantee either of success or the production of a quality cast. There are however, some good reasons why many lost wax art foundries in the developed world now use the ceramic shell investment system.
