REPRODUCTION MOULDS – A SUMMARY
Reproduction moulds are ‘negative image’ impressions of master patterns. The mould can be used to create a wax copy of the pattern which is suitable for investing and eventually, metal casting. Carefully designed moulds can also be used to cast reproductions in other materials including plaster, resin, and even low temperature metals.
Moulds constructed in flexible compounds (PVC plastics and RTV rubbers for instance), are able to deform and relax when pulled away for undercut features on pattern surfaces.
Moulds formed in rigid materials (plaster, glass reinforced resin etc) can lock-in to undercut pattern features, unless carefully constructed with removable piece parts.
There are several types of basic mould construction, impression moulds, pour (drop) moulds, brush/hand applied blanket moulds and restrained case moulds. Blanket and restrained case moulds made with RTV rubber compounds and plaster of Paris cases are the most common art foundry moulds.
