MASTER PATTERNS – A SUMMARY

The term MASTER PATTERN (or just PATTERN), refers to any sculpture or model sent to a foundry as a 'template' for casting.

There are two basic types of master pattern, single use LOST PATTERNS which are destroyed in the casting process, and PERMANENT PATTERNS, which can be moulded allowing for multiple copies..

The standard of construction and finish quality of the master pattern is one of the most important factors in determining the success of the eventual cast. A cast design can only ever be as good as the pattern used as a template.

A MASTER PATTERN should always be finished to the designer ’s complete satisfaction. Never send a pattern to a foundry which might need reworking before use..

A wide range of patternmaking materials are available to the sculptor, but only easily burnt off materials can be used to create lost patterns.

Patterns may contain additional features, these can include an internal armature, lifting points for handling and location points for fixing down the completed cast.

Patterns may be cut in the studio or foundry to accommodate the casting process. Patterns cut in the studio will normally be sectioned to the founder’s guidelines.

If in doubt about any aspect of your pattern preparation process, ask the founder. You should also inform the founder about any valuable pattern, insurance condition, hazardous material’s content, or other special feature that might affect their working procedures.
